Chatham Manor
The apparition of a white lady walks a path on these grounds that has become known as Ghost Walk. Chatham was built in 1771 by William Fitzhugh. He named it after a close friend, William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham. Another English friend of Fitzhugh brought his daughter to live at Chatham in an effort to break up her romance with a commoner. But the man followed her to America, and the two planned to elope from Chatham Manor. He gave her a rope ladder and waited in a small boat in a nearby river. Unfortunately, none other than George Washington, another close friend of Fitzhugh, was staying there at the same time. He learned of their plans from a maid and had his men arrest the suitor. The girl returned to England with her father and later married. But she vowed to return to Chatham Manor to look for her lover. Her ghost was first sighted there on the day she died, June 21, 1790, and returns every seven years on the anniversary of her death to wander along the path to the river, looking for her lost love. The Lady in White is next due to appear on June 21, 2000.

Shirley Plantation
Martha Pratt was a daughter of Edward Hill II, who built the great house now called Shirley Plantation in 1723. When she married an Englishman and settled in England, all she left behind was an unsigned portrait of herself. By 1858, family descendants had noticed an unusual property of the painting. Whenever Aunt Pratt's portrait was removed from its spot on the second floor, the frame would start shaking violently. They moved it to a bedroom on the third floor, stored it in the attic, and hung it on the first floor, but the portrait was never "happy" unless it was back in the second-floor bedroom. In 1974, the Virginia Tourist Office put the touchy painting on display at Rockefeller Center, along with other items related to psychic phenomena in the state. Martha Hills' portrait created quite a sensation. Spectators saw it moving constantly. It swayed back and forth so violently that other exhibits were also vibrating. The phenomenon was documented on an NBC-TV national news broadcast. The painting caused such hysteria that it was removed from the display. That did not stop Martha Hill. Dozens of office workers near the storeroom in which the painting was locked heard incessant knocking sounds coming from the room. When officials retrieved the painting, its frame was so badly damaged that it was sent for repair to Linden Galleries in Richmond, Virginia. The same eerie vibrations were reported by workers there. Finally, the portrait of Martha Hill was returned to the Shirley Plantation, where it hangs, peacefully, above a mahogany chest in Martha's second-floor bedroom.
Shirley Plantation is on the James River, southeast of Richmond, on Highway 5. Follow signs to the plantation grounds. The mailing address is Route 2 Box 635, Charles City, VA 23030. Phone: 804-829-5121

The town of Spanaway was first founded in 1836 by Russian fur traders. In 1880 the town developed into a large logging encampment due to the thick forest and the natural resource of a lake which made it easy for milling. My thoughts are the if a ghost is haunting only the grounds of school it would have had to be there due, most likely, to a logging accident during the clearing of the forest that became a field. there is no found historic reference to any specific incident.

Creaking beds and low moaning sounds suggest the presence of a very passionate ghost at the Rosario Resort on this island. The spirit of Alice Rheem, who lived in a mansion that is now part of the resort, returns to reenact good times in her room. She lived here in the late 1930s and died from alcoholism. Her husband built a mansion on the isolated island to try to control his libidinous wife, but his efforts only made her wilder. Her ghost, clad in a skimpy red nightgown, reappears in her old room. In 1987, three traveling entertainers were kept awake all night by the sounds of lovemaking from the room, which was empty at the time. They said the activity started just before midnight, after the light in the room went on and off three times.

Her ghost has also been seen in the old Goodwill Store, as well as in the present Sound View Cafe and Shakespeare & Company Bookstore. In 1854, Chief Seattle prophesied: "When the memory of my tribe shall become a myth among white men, when your children think themselves alone in the field, the store, the shop they will not be alone. When you think your streets deserted, they will throng with the returning hosts that once filled and still love this land, for the dead are not powerless." Other ghosts have been reported here too. -LAFAYETTE SQUARE
Decatur House
Despite attempts to keep it away, the ghost of Commodore Stephen Decatur has returned to his former residence. Just before the War of 1812, Decatur pushed for the conviction of Commander James Barron for not resisting a British patrol looking for American deserters on his frigate, the Chesapeake. Barron was convicted and suspended from the navy, and Decatur took over his post on the Chesapeake. Barron hated Decatur for ruining his career and eventually challenged him to a duel. Decatur kept the duel a secret from his wife Susan, and spent the night before staring blankly out of his first-floor bedroom window. The next morning, March 14, 1820, Decatur sneaked out the back door and rode to a field in Maryland to meet Barron in a duel. Decatur was shot in the liver and mortally wounded. He died at his home in his first-floor bedroom. His hysterical wife was not fit to be at his side. Since 1821, passersby have seen his morose figure staring from the downstairs bedroom window. To prevent his reappearance, the window on H Street was ordered walled up, and a fixed shutter now hides the wall. Recently his apparition has been seen in the early morning hours, slipping out the back door with a small box under his arm. It is the black velvet box that carries his dueling pistols. The haunting sounds of a sobbing woman, assumed to be his wife Susan, have also been reported in the house.

-WHITE HOUSE
Lincoln Bedroom
President Lincoln was perhaps the nation's most mystical leader, and he generated tremendous psychic energy. While living in the White House, he and his wife held several seances in an attempt to contact the spirit of their son Willie, who died there. One medium who visited the White House regularly gave Lincoln advice from great leaders of history. At one of those seances, the spirit of Daniel Webster pleaded with Lincoln to follow through with his efforts to free the slaves. Medium J. B. Conklin conveyed a message to Lincoln from his close friend Edward Baker, who had been killed at the battle of Ball's Bluff. The cryptic message said, "Gone elsewhere. Elsewhere is everywhere." In 1863, medium Charles Shockle visited the White House and performed a levitation. At another levitation, Lincoln allegedly ordered a Maine congressman to sit on top of a piano that was floating in midair. In November 1860, Lincoln told his wife he knew he would be elected for a second term but would die in office, and he saw his own assassination in a series of dreams three days before that fateful day of April 14, 1865. Afterward, many people reported seeing his ghost in the White House. Franklin D. Roosevelt's personal valet ran screaming from the White House one day, after seeing Lincoln's ghost. Eleanor Roosevelt's maid Mary Eben saw the ghost sitting on his bed pulling off his boots. Even the Roosevelt's dog Fala was said to have sensed Lincoln's presence. Grace Coolidge, Theodore Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Harry Truman, Margaret Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, James Haggerty, Jacqueline Kennedy, Ladybird Johnson, Susan Ford, and Maureen Reagan have all admitted sensing the presence of the Civil War president in the White House. The wife of Lyndon Johnson witnessed Lincoln's mysterious presence while she watched a television program about his
assassination. She felt compelled to read a plaque above the fireplace, which explained the dead president's connection to the room. Gerald Ford's daughter Susan saw Lincoln's ghost in the room in the 1980s. In 1987, Ronald Reagan's daughter Maureen and her husband Dennis Revell both saw Lincoln's translucent form next to the bedroom's fireplace.
This room was actually Lincoln's Cabinet Room. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation here. It was named the Lincoln Bedroom when his nine-foot-long bed was moved here.

-MOOREFIELD
Cole Mountain
The orange-red light seen on Cole Mountain has mystified people since the middle of the nineteenth century. The ball of light bobs up and down over the mountainside. No one has gotten close to the luminous ball, and most sightings take place from the road at the base of the mountain. Legend says the light is from the lantern of an old slave who worked on the Charles Jones plantation. The loyal slave disappeared on the side of the mountain during a racoon hunt and was never seen again. Nobody accused the slave of escaping. Most thought he just got lost in the woods.

-LAND O'LAKES
Summerwind Estate
Wisconsin's most famous haunted house was built in 1916 by Robert Lamont, who later became secretary of commerce under President Hoover. It is said that Lamont once fired two shots at a ghost that appeared in his kitchen. The house had many owners over the years, but only a few realized they were living with ghosts. Arnold and Ginger Hinshaw and their six children moved into the house in 1970. Within a few days of unpacking, they realized the house was possessed by spirits. Shadows moved through the house, mumbling voices were heard, and the apparition of a woman was frequently seen floating through the French doors into the parlor. Other strange things went on in the house. Windows opened by themselves, appliances failed for no reason, and eerie noises echoed through the house at night. Then, while remodeling a closet, the couple found the mummified remains of a human corpse. Their supernatural house soon became too much for the Hinshaws. Arnold started hinting that he was possessed by demons and finally had a nervous breakdown. Ginger attempted suicide. Ginger's father Raymond Bober asked her and the children to come live with him in Granton. He bought the house and started remodeling it into a restaurant. During renovations, Bober encountered the ghost of Jonathan Carver, an eighteenth-century explorer. The ghost told Bober that it did not want anyone living on his property. According to the phantom, the Sioux Indians had deeded him the northern third of Wisconsin when he negotiated a peace between two tribes. The deed was in a black box sealed under the foundation of Summerwind. The box was never found, and Bober never completed renovations, because contractors refused to work at the haunted house. The house was abandoned in the early 1980s and soon fell into ruin. After three investors bought the twenty-room mansion in 1986, it was struck by lightning and burned down in June 1988. Only the foundation and two thirty- foot-high stone chimneys remain.

-MINERAL POINT
Walker-Grundy House
This log inn, built in 1836, is haunted by a murderer who was hanged in front of it. On November 1, 1842, William Caffee was hanged from a scaffold erected in the yard of the inn. Before a crowd of four thousand people, the contemptuous man rode atop his own coffin and, using two beer bottles, drummed a funeral march on the sides of the casket. Afterward, his cantankerous spirit took up residence in Walker House, and over 150 years later his ghost still walks the halls. Employees and guests complain of the scary sounds of heavy breathing, footsteps on the second floor, and a presence that turns doorknobs but never opens doors. Scary voices and poltergeist activity frequently occur in the main dining room and kitchen. In October 1981, owner Walker Calvert saw Caffee's headless ghost sitting on a bench on the back porch. The phantom stayed visible for several minutes. That same month a waitress saw the ghost, this time with a head, walking on the second floor.

This combination elementary and high school building has been haunted by an unidentified presence since 1952. Custodians, students, teachers, and even superintendents have reported strange happenings near the former library, which was located where the weight and wrestling room is today. Putrefying odors, intense cold spots, moving mists, disembodied footsteps, lights turning off and on, and appliances working even when they are not plugged in are just a few of the unexplainable events. The superintendent at the time, Harold Hopkinson, remembers hearing and feeling an invisible presence walk past him in the hall and head up the short stairway to the old library. Then he heard the door open and close. No one can remember a tragedy occurring at the school, and the manifestations remain unexplained.

-GREEN RIVER
Sweetwater County Library
Parapsychological phenomena have occurred in this building almost from the day it opened in 1980. Lights and electrical appliances go on and off for no reason, and unexplainable voices and strange flapping sounds reverberate through the building at night. Library director Patricia LeFaivre says her staff has seen balls of light dancing around in the closed art gallery room. At least two typewriters have been observed typing on their own, and once, a spring-steel gate at the entrance to the library started spinning wildly with no one near it. Maintenance workers have reported a ghost sitting in the Multipurpose Room late at night. One night, one of them looked directly at the ghost, and the phantom shot into the air and made a loud popping sound when it hit the ceiling. The library was built on top of a cemetery that dates from the 1860s. The graves were moved in the 1920s, but unearthed bodies started turning up on the property in the 1940s. In 1983, three more unrecorded graves were discovered during the construction of a retaining wall. In 1985, during work on the foundation, the coffin of a small child was found. How many more corpses remain hidden in the ground is anyone's guess.
